Magdalen College School 7+, 8+, 9+ Exam Dates

  • 8+/9+ Entrance Tests will be on Wednesday 13th of January 2021 at 9:15am – 2:30pm
  • 8+/9+ Interview schedules: Tuesday, 19th of January and Wednesday, 20th of January 2021
  • 7+ Entrance Tests will be on Saturday, 23rd of January 2021 at 9am – 2pm
  • 7+ Observation Lessons will be on Thursday, 28th of January and Friday, 29th of January 20219 at 11am and 1 – 3pm.

Magdalen College School 7+ Exam Styles

Applicants will take tests in English (spelling, descriptive writing and three comprehension exercises) and Mathematics. Tests are relatively short that will take only 15‐20 minutes for each part of the English test and 45 minutes for the Mathematics test, with breaks in between parts of the test. All applicants will be tested together and most of the tests are teacher-led.

Magdalen College School 8+ Exam Styles

Applicants will take tests in English (spelling, composition and comprehension), Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. The test will last only 15 minutes for spelling, 30 minutes for composition, 45 minutes for comprehension, an hour for Mathematics and 50 minutes for Verbal Reasoning. There will be breaks in between

Magdalen College School 9+ Exam Styles

Boys take tests in English (spelling, composition – both fiction and descriptive writing – and comprehension), Maths and Verbal Reasoning. Tests last 15 minutes for spelling, 20 minutes for each of the compositions, 40 minutes for comprehension, 45 minutes for Maths and 50 minutes for Verbal Reasoning. There are breaks between tests.

Magdalen College School 11+ and 13+ Exam Dates

  • 11+ and 13+ Entrance Examinations and Pre-test for 2023 entry will be on Saturday, 16th of January 2021, from 9am to 2.30pm.
  • 13+ Music Scholarship Auditions will be on Monday, 25th of January 2021 at 9am.
  • Pre-test and Interviews for 11+ and 13+ entry will be on Tuesday, 26th of January 2021.
  • 13+ Academic Scholarship Examinations will be on Monday, 22nd of February and Tuesday, 23rd of February 2021.
  • 13+ Sports Scholarship Assessments will be on Friday, 12th of March 2021, from 9am – 3.30pm.
  • 13+ Art Scholarship Interview will be on Friday, 12th of March 2021, from 4pm
  • Application deadline for Academic, 13+Art and Sport and all Music Scholarships will be on Friday, 8th of January 2021.

Magdalen College School 11+ Exam Styles

The entrance examination has three tests consists of the following:

  • English
    • English test will last for only an hour. Applicants will be asked to complete two composition questions (fiction and non-fiction) with a choice of question within each composition section. Attention to details were focused on the following; spelling, punctuation, handwriting, content of the responses, ability to write lucidly and effectively, and your creativity and flair.
  • Mathematics
    • Mathematics test will last for only an hour and is based on Level 5 of the National Curriculum. Calculators are not allowed and write your answers on the paper.
  • Verbal Reasoning

    • Verbal Reasoning will last for 45 minutes and is a paper-based test. Questions are not in multiple-choice and write your answers on the paper. Applicants have the opportunity to work through sample questions and answers with a member of task to ask any queries before the test starts.
  • Interviews:

    • Applicants who performed well in the entry test will be invited back for an interview. They will be asked to read and comment on a short passage and to bring in an object to talk about. Occasionally, applicants may be given a few short Mathematics questions. The school is eager to hear about the applicant’s hobbies and extracurricular activities that an applicant is excited about and loves doing.The interview lasts about 30 minutes and school aims to make every applicant to feel as much at ease as possible so they just enjoy the experience.

Magdalen College School 13+ Exam Styles

There are two methods of entry to the Magdalena College School at 13+:

  • Common Entrance Examination, for boys at preparatory schools.
  • 13+ Entrance Examination, for applicants from maintained and independent schools which do not prepare candidates for Common Entrance.
  • Common Entrance:
    • Applicants must sit the school’s Pre-test when they are Year 6. Deadline for registration during their Year 6 and current preparatory school will be on the 31st of October. The tests are the same as the 11+ entrance tests and take place on the same day.
  • Entrance Examination:
    • Applicants will take tests in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. Papers are largely based on the Key Stage 3 curriculum.
      • English paper is for 1 hour 30 minutes that consists of an extended test in comprehension and a composition.
      • Mathematics paper is for an hour and is allowed to use a calculator.
      • Verbal Reasoning test is for 45 minutes and applicants have the opportunity to work through sample questions before the test starts. There are breaks between the papers, and at lunchtime applicants are offered a choice of activities.
  • Interviews
    • Successful applicants that are based on the performance of the entry test will be invited back for an interview. The interview will last about half an hour and applicants will be given the chance to talk about a particular object or subject of their choice. Also, the school will give them a passage or poem to read aloud and discuss.
