Forest School 4+ Exam Styles

A series of low-key activities which include: – picture recognition, some letter recognition, following a pattern, knowing colours, counting, drawing, naming simple shapes, sequencing, listening to a story, playing and responding sensibly to the adults who are present.

Forest School 11+ Exam Styles

  • Selection criteria
    • School team will be interviewing ALL registered applicants before the Entrance Exam, which is different from the previous years. This will enable the school team to identify potential pupils who may not perform as well as they otherwise might in the Entrance Exam. Please note following the interview ALL applicants will be invited to sit the entrance exam on Monday, 11 January 2021.
    • A written, confidential report from the current school.
    • Performance in English and Mathematics examinations.
  • Entrance examination:
    • Mathematics – 45 minutes(non-calculator)
      • Numerical skills and Reasoning questions that require arithmetical knowledge such as addition, multiplication and fractions.
      • Problems to solve in a variety of contexts which applicants may have not met before. These will be explained in the question.
      • School is looking for applicants who can use logical and creative thinking when problem-solving.
      • This year there will be a separate answer sheet on which to write the final answers. This will be clearly explained in the examination.
    • English – 45 minutes
      • Reading and comprehension assessments. Applicants will read a short passage and then answer questions on the passage.
      • School is looking for evidence that candidates have clearly understood what has happened in the passage. Candidates who do well demonstrate that they can understand layers of meaning and show sensitivity to the writer’s use of language.
      • In relation to the passage, there will be at least one question giving applicants the opportunity to write creatively, either in a short piece of fiction or non-fiction.
      • School is looking for original and accurate writing. Applicants who do well write in an imaginative and engaging manner.
