No specific preparation for the assessment is required and all applicants start on an equal footing, with identical opportunities.

Examination will be administered in classrooms by two teachers who will also observe social interaction and behaviour. The boys will have the opportunity to play, and will be given light refreshments during the three-hour period they attend the school.

University College School 11+ Exam Style

  • The UCS 11+ Entrance Examination format
Since January 2020, the format of School 11+ Entrance Examination at UCS is as follows.

    • English Examination – one hour and 15 minutes. Time will be split between two sections, namely Reading Comprehension for 45 minutes and Creative Writing for 30 minutes.
    • Maths Examination – one hour and 15 minutes which includes three sections; Multiple- Choice, Core Mathematics and Problems. All questions will continue to cover the National Curriculum Mathematics topics.

(Please note that schools do not require applicants to sit a reasoning paper.)

The format and content of school 11+ entrance examinations, which matches the National Curriculum requirements for the end of Key Stage 2, ensure that all 11+ applicants are evaluated primarily on their performance in the core curriculum subjects of English and Mathematics which are taught daily in every school.

    • In previous years, shortlisting for interview will be based on the performance in the Entrance Examinations as described above, and an academic reference from the current school. The Interview Day itself consists firstly of a classroom small group activity for 50 minutes, followed by an individual interview with a member of the teaching staff. Senior staff will meet the boys during part of their classroom activity and will also meet parents, in groups, to answer any questions they may have.
