Overview

Royal Russell School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school in the Shirley area of Croydon, South London. It educates pupils aged between 3 and 18 under the patronage of Her Majesty The Queen and is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference.

Royal Russell resides on a site of over 100 acres in gardens in a wooded estate two miles south-east of Croydon and is noted for its stunning architecture, spacious classrooms and state-of-the-art facilities for Sport, Performing Arts, Science, Media, Technology and Design.

The small class sizes enable individual attention for each student, with continuous guidance and outstanding pastoral care are provided for their benefit. A strong bond exists between the school and the parents, who are regularly informed of effort, grades and the results of students in regards to the school’s assessments.

Students are profoundly cared for as aspirational targets are set for them, relative to their unique ability in each subject. They are taught mathematics, English, music, biology, geography, PSHEE, art, design and history, with French and Spanish as modern language options. The school organizes day-trips to Boulogne and a residential trip to Paris, France for Year 7 pupils.

Year 7 students are taught and equipped with an interactive whiteboard, allowing staff to engage a variety of teaching techniques. To experience fun after lessons, the school offers a wide range of co-curricular activities including a multitude of sports clubs such as House Sport, Academic PE, Multi Sports, Trampolining, Table Tennis, Leisure Swim, Swim Squad, Running Club, Football, Netball, Hockey and Basketball Clubs.

For students who prefer more creative engagement, the school offers Photography & Photoshop, Art & Design, Specialist Drawing Club, Design & Technology, Trinity Drama, Drama Tech and the National Theatre Playwriting Club. For musically talented individuals can join the Orchestra, Choir, Chamber Choir, Chamber Music and Jamming Session, Training Band, Swing Band and Music Theory clubs.

All students are encouraged to live by Royal Russell’s motto: Non sibi sed omnibus (Not for one’s self but for all).

Royal Russell School 11 Plus (11+) Admissions

Completing a registration form is the first step of the process. On receipt of the registration form, a confidential reference will be requested from the applicant’s current school.
Personal tours of the school can be arranged via the admissions office at admissions@royalrussell.co.uk.
The entrance examinations consist of Mathematics and English assessments, as well as online reasoning.

Applicants will also attend a short interview and are advised to bring a piece of work or small trophy/object of interest to be used as a starting point of the discussion. In the afternoon, applicants can join in an activity of their choice, such as Art, Science, Drama, Music, Football or Swimming.

Offers of places are generally made in January and February following the exams and the deadline for acceptances is in March.

Royal Russell School 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

  • The English paper consists of a comprehension exercise and extended writing paper.
  • The mathematics paper is designed to measure your child’s problem solving and arithmetic skills.
  • The online reasoning test (CEM Select) will be taken online which includes Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning.
