Sessions are timed, marked and discussed in detail. Children are expected to attempt unfamiliar problems without guidance — developing the composure that assessment conditions require. Writing receives sustained attention: planning, drafting and reviewing within a single session is a regular part of the English work.
11+ assessments test Maths, English comprehension, creative and discursive writing, and in most cases verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Some schools also include an interview or group assessment. Pre-11+ is where children develop fluency across all of these areas — so that when full exam preparation begins, the focus can be on technique rather than building capability from scratch.
Selective schools at this level are looking for children who think independently, write with precision and range, solve complex problems under time pressure, and carry themselves composedly in an interview. Pre-11+ builds the habits that make those qualities consistent.
