Sessions at 8+ are more demanding than at 7+ in both content and pace. Children work independently for longer periods and are expected to review their own work. Technique is still taught explicitly, but independent application is expected throughout. Timed practice is part of every session.
8+ assessments typically include Maths, English comprehension, creative writing and, in many cases, verbal or non-verbal reasoning. Papers are longer than at 7+ and marking is more precise. The written component tends to differentiate candidates most — schools are looking for children who can sustain a piece of writing with clear structure, range of vocabulary and some originality.
Strong 8+ candidates read carefully, answer precisely, approach maths problems methodically and sustain concentration across a longer assessment. Those who perform most consistently have practised under realistic conditions — timed, unsupported and marked against specific criteria.
