Teaching Methodology – How sessions are run

Sessions at 8+ are more demanding than at 7+ in both content and pace. Children work independently for longer periods and are expected to review their own work. Technique is still taught explicitly, but independent application is expected throughout. Timed practice is part of every session.

What 8+ entrance examinations involve

8+ assessments typically include Maths, English comprehension, creative writing and, in many cases, verbal or non-verbal reasoning. Papers are longer than at 7+ and marking is more precise. The written component tends to differentiate candidates most — schools are looking for children who can sustain a piece of writing with clear structure, range of vocabulary and some originality.

Strong 8+ candidates read carefully, answer precisely, approach maths problems methodically and sustain concentration across a longer assessment. Those who perform most consistently have practised under realistic conditions — timed, unsupported and marked against specific criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child join 8+ if they didn’t do 7+ preparation?

Yes — if they’re academically ready. We focus on core technique quickly and build independence.

Independence and explanation. It’s less about knowing facts and more about reasoning clearly under time.

We teach a repeatable method: identify the clue, link it to the question, then explain in a clear sentence.

Often yes. Structure, vocabulary and control are major differentiators.

Yes — because many competitive formats still reward accuracy, listening and punctuation control.

We build checking habits and timed routines to reduce avoidable errors.

Most students move into Foundations to build deeper reasoning for Pre-11+ and 11+ success.
